Micah Velte, USTA nationally ranked # 6, sweeps singles and doubles in the 2nd Annual T3Tennis Wheelchair Tournament at Saddleback College on March 22nd - 23rd.
Congratulations Micah! Micah is a 2 sport athlete; he's off to play in the national wheelchair basketball championships in early April.
Ian Tellez, from Tijuana, Mexico traveled up to participate again this year, placing 1st in the A doubles, partnered with Micah.
Ian, a senior at Victory Christian Academy in Chula Vista, is a 3 sport athlete (basketball, track and tennis) and has accepted a college scholarship to the University of Southern Minnesota on a basketball scholarship. You may also see him in the Pan American games in Lima, Peru in summer 2027 AND in the 2028 Paralympic games in Los Angeles - he is the fastest junior in Mexico in the 200 and 400 meter races and only 4 seconds off qualifying for both of those huge events. We can all say ".....we knew him when."
John Henry placed 2nd in the A singles, and 2nd in the A doubles, partnering with Miles McIntosh. Great job guys.
Coming in 1st in the B singles, congratulations to Liam Makkar, who defeated Miles McIntosh (2nd place) 8 - 6 in a very close set.
Liam also placed 1st in B doubles, with partner Zack Schoep, who had a great tournament.
Nellie Foulger and Zack had the closest match of the 2-day tournament, battling to a tie-breaker in the opening set of day one.
Fernando Gallego - we missed you buddy. Fernando (who is also ranked in the top 20) had to drop out at the last minute but we expect him to come up from Chula Vista for the Dee Henry Memorial Tournament at the end of May.
Including Fernando, 7 of the 8 players entered in this tournament are NATIONALLY RANKED - 4 in the top 20 !!! That's a huge tribute to their effort and work over the last 3+ years (longer for Micah who has been playing since he was 4 years old.)
A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers from 6 different schools. And to the great fan support from friends, relatives, teachers and even a principal!
Start this New Year out right. Give this lifetime sport a try!
